St Swithun's Festival of Arts

Welcome to our 3rd Annual Festival of the Arts. The church seems the obvious place to showcase the importance of artwork today, being itself filled with beautiful treasures from previous generations. Music making and visual art is so important in our spiritual lives and for our mental well-being. As the host for this Festival St Swithun’s Church offers a unique venue and a warm welcome to everyone. May God bless your visit to the festival.

The Revd. Andrew Hawken, Vicar of East Grinstead

The Festival Art Exhibition

‘“I found I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way - things I had no words for.” Georgia O’Keeffe

A school art department is a world of its own. Students devise innovative creative projects and are guided by their teachers towards outcomes which do justice to their ideas.

The Festival showcases a selection of work from Sackville School’s current cohort. They have studied GCSE art, A level Photography, A level Art and A level Textiles. Recording the world around them, they make imaginative leaps in order to develop work that is totally original. Students have made visits to Suffolk and London, to take in exhibitions and work on site. They have also engaged with visiting artists, thanks to a grant from The Arts Society East Grinstead.

Despite so much disruption over the past two years, these young people have produced work of great personality and strength of character, often dealing with themes that have touched all of our lives. We hope you enjoy sharing their ideas and witnessing their considerable abilities.

We are delighted also to have contributions from local artist Suzi Alfred and her Unwind Your Mind art workshops, and from The EG & District Mental Health Association Art Group.

Suzi Alfred’s workshops focus on “The Art of Letting Go” and explore intuitive painting, layering acrylics and mark making using different tools, and simply being present in the moment. She encourages her students to just “be creative with others”.

EG&D Mental Health Association is a small, self-funding charity promoting mental health for local people of all ages and runs daytime activities including art, conservation and music. They help fund mental health training for teachers at our local comprehensive and primary schools.
